A Day in the Life: December 23rd


(Aged 15)
Wea.                                           WED. DEC. 23, 1896               Ther.

Drew 1 load of manure.  Drew 1 load of wood for us + one load of wood for grandma.  In P.M. laid still.

(Aged 17)
Wea.                                             FRI. DEC. 23, 1898               Ther.

Drove to school.  Mrs. Mason came up with me going to stay with us awhile.  In eve went down to Xmas tree at U.B. Church.  Went home with Clara Lonquist.

(Aged 18)
Wea.                                             SAT. DEC. 23, 1899               Ther.

Left Roswell’s.  Took the 8.13 A.M. train from Centreville for home.  Got home all right.  Rode up from the burg with Steve Littlefield.


(Aged 19)
Wea.                                              SUN. DEC. 23, 1900                 Ther.

Stayed at home all day.  In eve went up to see Alice. XX  Andrew has got Alice + I each a chair.



(Aged 20)
Wea.                                              MON. DEC. 23, 1901                Ther.

Boarded up in front of cows borrowed boards of pa 455.  In P.M. built a stall for Bill + Tom.  In eve went down to X-mas tree at Thayer school.  Good pieces.

Drew a load of hay + split wood.

Editor's Note: Steve Littlefield must have been hailed a hero bringing the runaway son home that last mile.  It had been 5 months since Allen crossed the threshold into his house and just as long since he'd seen his family.  He wandered and provided well for himself but he needed to come home.  His point was made.  He was his own man outside his father's shadow but if you're coming home, you might as well make it happen for Christmas.
