A Day in the Life: March 26th
(Aged 14)
Wea. Cold THU. MARCH 26, 1896 Ther. 21
Wrote a letter to Lewis Fox. Went to school. Sap ran all last night. Pa tended boiling it a while + let it burn very badly all night. It rained until about noon then it began to snow + the wind to blow very hard at 7 PM it was 21 above zero.

In A.M. went down on the Webster place + helped Bert Bingham shingle. In P.M. we went up to John Warn’s to see about some money. Stopped at the store when we came back.

Stayed at home all day. Sold Randsom King my wheel lamp, bell + cyclometer for $25.00. I am to get a new crank + peddle also an air pump. Ma, Rollie and Randsom went up to Ivory to S.S.

Rode to school with Gorden. Had a review in Algebra. Asked Erd and Irma up to eat sugar Friday eve.

Went to the factory. Gail Plowed. Alice went up home. Andrew + I went over on Frew Run to find some cows but didn’t find any.

NO ENTRY MADE AGAIN UNTIL MAY 1st
Editor's Note: The Lewis Fox I found in the Census was only slightly older than Allen and would soon be working out as a farm laborer. He lived in Michigan but his mother was born someplace in New York State. I'm guessing that is the connection to the area and why he might know Allen.
You've got to love Allen's initiative in selling off his unwanted things to the hired men. I know I was mad at the mark-up on the wagon a while back but I'm less fond of Randsom for some reason and not so concerned about his consumer welfare since the shooting incident.

I think it is time to forgive Ransom and move on with your life. Just sayin'
ReplyDeleteIn due time. I still feel like he's a menace more foolish than evil in nature. But I realize the family survived his tenure so I'll try to move on. ;-)
