Editor's Note:  I have investigated the matter further and indeed it seems that Erie Cowan is extremely ill as was helpfully suggested the other day.  Now, the Cowan is a huge family in the area with a few branches that most likely connect a century previous from this time (1899).  Basically three Cowan's get mentioned by Allen most.  There is Mattie Cowan whom he "dates" once in a while.  There is Mearle Cowan who he seems to pal around with and now there is Erie Cowan who is ailing and visited by Frank and Nora.  I had been assuming that Mattie and Mearle were siblings but the trick is they are not,  Mearle and Erie are.  Erie is about 12 years older than his little brother though and Mearle (spelled numerous ways) is only a couple years older than Allen.  According to Census records it looks like Mearle names a son Erie after his brother.

Mattie's branch of the tree and that of the men does not obviously connect that I have found.  However their great-grandfathers may have been brothers since both of these men seem to have come from the Hudson Valley. My curiosity to start untangling the threads started because Mearle and Mattie never seemed to get mentioned together as siblings would.  Then I thought Erie was Mattie's father and now I know he is not.

I am certain there are plenty of Cowans still in the area who might be able to shed a brighter light on this but at least it's a start.
