Editor's Note:  It would be great to know what songs the singers were working on in the class.  Wikipedia has a nice list of popular songs in 1898.  Lots of Sousa and Foster are on the list but one of the most popular songs that year according to the book The Songs We Sang (Castle Books, NY 1964) was "When Johnny Comes Marching Home".  Though the lyrics were written during the Civil War, the book states "It was not until the Spanish-American War that it became a national hit".
