NO ENTRY MADE

***********

Editor's Note:  The 1898 entry seems to be referencing the naming of the Town of Ivory.  Previously, the area was known as Pope Hollow but since the use of two words in the naming of any new Post Offices was forbidden, a different one had to be found.  According to our Grandmother, a local man happened to look down at a box of Ivory Soap at his feet and thought it was a most suitable name.  Of course, there are many versions and many sources on this story one of which I have in my hand: a brochure from "The Fiftieth Anniversary of the Ivory Chapel of the Frewsburg Baptist Church".  It is dated August 17, 1947.  In it, they tell the story our Grandmother did but they actually name Clarence Love as the local man.  There is also the mention of a contest held to decide the name found at the History Page on the Town of Carrol Website.   I'm sure the truth is a bit of all of these accounts.

  1. And yet our grandmother was Dove soap woman through and through.

  2. I grew up with my father telling a story round the campfire about hearing this disembodied voice coming from off the lake, and it would say "it floats....(eerie sounds inserted here) it floats"....and then someone finally got the nerve to call back "What floats" and the eerie voice would answer "ivory soap"....they made a lot of that product in it's day. A town named after it, doesn't surprise me a'tall.
