Snowed-in in the Burg...Sort of
A Day in the Life: February 11th
(Aged 14)
Wea. Stormy TUE. FEB. 11, 1896 Ther.
Went to school. Pa went down to the burg + let me stay all night at Mrs. Mason’s. It stormed + blowed all day + drifted the road full. It was a terible (sic) day.

Wea. Cloudy FRI. FEB. 11, 1898 Ther. 36
Went to school got Topise shod. Raymond Harrington rode home with me. The snow is nearly all gone + it is getting kind of muddy.

Wea. SAT FEB. 11, 1899 Ther.
Stayed at home all day. Pa + Ma went to the burg and brought home my pictures that came from town by mail.
The thermometer is 22 below zero this morning. George Walters took a load of logs to Falconer.

Wea. SUN. FEB. 11, 1900 Ther.
Stayed at home in A.M. In P.M. went to S.S. at Ivory. In eve Frank Warn and I went to the burg to church. He went home with Jennie Danielson + Clara Longquist. I took Bessie Traver home.

Wea. MON. FEB. 11, 1901 Ther.
Went to the burg with a grist in A.M. In P.M. Aunt Addie and Bernice came down. I drew wood from the Walters farm and took them part way home and also part of a load for grandma.
I brought her over in P.M.
(Aged 20)
Wea. TUE. FEB. 11, 1902 Ther.
Pearle came down. Rollie + I done chores + drew up some wood + pine roots. Loren Scott brought a man down to hire out. He comes Sunday to work a week + longer if we like each other.

Wea. WED. FEB. 11, 1903 Ther.
Went to the factory in the A.M. Ma came over in P.M. Traded the old buggy to Arnie Shaw for some bells and a watch.
Editor's Note: Aunt Ada is Frank's older sister Adaline Eccles. Yes, that's right Frank Cass' two sisters each married an Eccles brother. Ada had two daughters but the first, Myrtle, died quite young, in fact it is likely her second, surviving daughter Bernice never knew her sister. Bernice was a few years younger than her cousin Allen.
22 below zero! That is brutal. I hope it warmed up before everyone went out about their business. This was before we even considered wind chill factor.

ReplyDeleteQuestion: Do you think that Allen is very religious or is it truly all about meeting up with girls at church? I question his motives. But then again, maybe this was the highlight of the week. Also, I am amazed by the dates that he is even talking about other girls especially when it comes to 1900 since that is the year he married our great grandma Alice. What is the lightning bolt that makes it all happen? I am looking for photos of Addy Eccles. Seriously, hardly anyone wrote on the back of these photos. Would love to know what the photos were that he had to send to Jamestown to get developed. For a poor family we sure had alot of high quality photos and snap shots through the years.
ReplyDeleteI think church was simply a customary part of everyone's life. I don't think it was necessarily given much philosophical thought. And the social aspect would have been extremely important to a farming community. You and I walk out our front door and see neighbors, people weren't guaranteed that in Carroll, NY at the turn of the 19th C. I have seen similar situations in England today in small villages. Everyone helps the church out in some way whether it's polishing benches, donating flowers or working the Summertime fete regardless of their religious beliefs. The church doubled as a community center. And hell ya, girls would have been a huge draw for Allen. He never mentions praying or God...just church as a destination.
