Editor's Note: *The actual amount borrowed of(f) Ma is confusing.  It might not be as drastic as $40 but I can't tell for certain because Allen corrected the amount by writing over it.  It could have been $5.00 or $4.00.  In any event, I wonder if he borrowed from his Ma to pay off the note?  So not only is Ma a free babysitter for Willard but she "pays" for the privilege.  The power kids have over parents is amazing.

I'm unsure who the letter writer with the initials G.W. is but it is telling that Allen doesn't write out the whole name the way he does Mabel White's.  It could have just been a "personalized" advertisement because believe me we have found that direct-mailings have been around for a long time.  Of course, G.W. could be a girl whose identity he wishes to keep secret.

Comments

  1. I think G.W. might be his friend Geo. Washington Fenton, the g-grandfather of Tom Fenton in whose horse barn they had many a party. Remember the carvings Tom showed us? I don't think it is a girl. I think Allen would have gladly named names if a girl sent him a note. Can you say Lothario?

  2. I thought of that but he always referred to him as GWF and also he says "a" G.W which gave me pause to query it.

  3. How cool that a man kept diaries. Old diaries are always fascinating to me.
