A Day in the Life: January 15th

(Aged 14)

Went to school got a ride home with Frank Nelson.  Nice sleying (sic) we are getting in logs at Brunts Mill for a barn.
                      

(Aged 16)
Wea.  Rainy                                   SAT. JAN. 15, 1898                        Ther.   34

Stayed at home.  Pa + Ma went to Jamestown.  They got a collar button, a stand up (collar) and an undershirt.  Sent a letter to Fannie Fower. After they got home from town pa went up to Ed Bragg’s.  They got Rollie some Tiddledy (sic) Winks.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiddlywinks#History

Basic corncob pipe--most likely the type Allen would have had.

Went to the factory.  When I came back Pa was down to the barn and had found my pipe and tobacco.  I hadn’t used hardly any.  He said I must quit or leave home.

Ma+ Grandma went up to see Aunt May she is better.  In the eve went down to the burg with Mearle Cowan went to the Baptist Church.

Ma, Rollie + I went to Jamestown got me a pair of undressed kid gloves cost $1.20. 
In eve, Pa, Ma + Rollie went up to the Maxwell place.

Did chores in A.M.  In P.M. Alice and I went up after the guns cost .50 to have them fixed.  One of them shook so good there was no danger of anything getting killed.
Alice and I stayed over in the evening.

Drew manure.  Pa + I dehorned 5 cows and the bull.  I sawed of(f) 5 of them.  Drew 3 loads of manure.

Worked in Joel’s Mill all day.

Went up on Wheeler Hill with Lyle Coe to look for a boiler.  Didn’t find any.

Editor's Note:  I really appreciate Frank's hard stand on tobacco.  Good dad, indeed.  However, Allen is such a typical teen lamenting only that he had barely used it yet.  Was this in regard to the monetary loss or the fact that he wasn't done determining his interest in the habit yet?

I'm thinking a boiler means a rabbit.  

Follow-up:    Mrs. Mason actually is Nora's step-mother and therefore a grandmother figure to Allen.  She was married to Harry Babcock and presumably, later to a Mr. Mason.

  1. That is some serious tough love from Frank about the tobacco. Talk about zero tolerance. I wish we knew more about Frank but we don't have anyone left who knew him. SIGH.
