Tombstone Tuesday

Maple Grove Cemetery
Frewsburg, NY

The day we planted hostas.  From left to right:  Sandra Lucas; Richard Lucas; Mabel Lucas; Stuart Lucas

My mother has a stone in her memory but she is not buried there.  Though divorced longer than they were married, our parents were able to be good friends again after a decade of healing in between.  Dad honored Mom with a stone since, at the time, her ashes were with Diana in a Tiffany Vase that survived the California Earthquake of 1994.  They have since found a proper resting place.

I remember visiting Gram's grave soon after she died.  Dad was very sad and flustered by the lack of new grass growth on the fresh dirt.  I remember laughing and getting him to laugh too in that bittersweet way we all can when we are mourning by pointing out he was pouring Miracle-Gro on his mother's grave.  I told him it wasn't going to do what we really wanted it to do.
