A Day in the Life: February 16th

Went over to Grandma’s.

Wea. very cold + stormy WED. FEB. 16, 1898 Ther. 10
Drove the carriage to school. Went over to Mrs. Mason’s brought her a pail of water. Alice Peterson has got a sore throat + was sick in bed all day. I heard last night our battleship Maine was blown up at Havana + 253 men were killed.

Drove to school. Went into the laboratory the last division + experimented. After school went up to Bradley’s to see if he had saved our boards.

Went to school. In eve took Bessie Traver to a party up to Allie Smedley’s. Got home at 3 o’clock.

Wea. SAT. FEB. 16, 1901 Ther.
Did chores in A.M. In P.M. Ma, Alice + I went over to Grandma’s. I built her a hen house. We stayed there to supper. Frank Kinneston came over in the evening.

Went to the factory + done chores. Chained the little red devon cow. Took my calf over to pa’s because it’s warmer.

Editor's Note: "Remember the Maine" was the cry that fanned the flames of the Spanish American War but The Battleship Maine's destruction may have just been a terrible accident and not the supposed result of an enemy mine. Whatever the truth, the event was no less tragic.
On a different matter altogether, I just don't understand what Allen is doing driving Bessie Traver around until 3 A.M. when he is stepping out with Alice. Boys.

As my husband tells his eldest daughter: Men are dogs. Boys are puppies. I am sure Allen told his daughters the same thing. As far as Remember the Maine, when I had possession of the diaries I remember reading this entry in 1991 and thinking that "Wow, they didn't have CNN back in the days." Look how times have changed in the 20 years since I first read this entry. I would prefer some slow news days if you get me (snow) drift.
