Editor's Note:  The Rev. E.L. Gates was actually Eugene Levi Gates born in Harmony, NY around 1855.  He seems to have been a well known Baptist minister in the area--certainly known to the Cass family.  The Rev. was married to a woman named Ida and they had at least three children: Dana; Alfred and Comer so there might be Gates around today who could tell more of the story.  He was only 43 when he fell so very tragic indeed.
